This was a great demonstration. I recently took a swimming refresher as an adult and the instructor started us off in a 9ft area and just worked on breathing and vertical buoyancy. He said that everyone will float back to the top and then glanced at me before adding...except this guy. He'll come back up eventually...hopefully. lol. I have a very low body fat. Many of the women let go of the wall and their heads were above the water without having to do anything. A few muscular guys bobbed for a sec but didn't go that far down. The guy next to me sank rapidly so myself and the guy on the other side reached down and pulled him up. He was tense and essentially pushing the water up instead of down. He tried again next to the ladder for support and felt safe enough to relax and was able to float. I then let go of the side and sank about a foot before slowly coming back up but only my goggles broke the surface before leveling out just below it. We were confident afterwards but I wish that we'd learned more about playing with position/surface area like this.

it's the lungs that bring you back up? that statement is weird. How are you supposed to inflate your lungs if you have exhaled in the water, before you come up to the surface?? how is that intuitive if you're thrown into water unprepared and then by instinct breathed out all the air and then expect to come up to the surface??

This is such a great demo. I'm an adult learning how to swim and tread, and I have watched almost every single video on treading but I really enjoyed watching this one, especially how easily you're able to move from floating your front to your back by calmly letting your head lead without much movement. The other video focused on sculling is great too, I've had it explained to me and I've watched a ton of videos but still not quite getting what I'm doing wrong until I watched that video. Ready to try these techniques in the pool.

Do people vary in their buyoncy ? Do people with more body fat float better than people whose body fat percentage is much less ? Is the lung capacity another factor in floating abilty ? More air in lungs= more floatability ?
